Last weekend Yukio Akagariyama of Japan stopped “The Valcano” Ronnie Alcano in the finals of the World 9-Ball Championship. Akagariyama earned the title and a hefty $36,000 for his hard work, all of which he turned around and donated to Japan’s Earthquake Relief Fund.

What a remarkable tale?! I couldn’t help but wonder how many players would do the same for their country.

Not to be confused with "The Tipping Point" a bestseller by Malcom Gladwell

(not to be confused with “The Tipping Point” a bestseller by Malcom Gladwell)

I’d like to take this opportunity to discuss gratuity. Because by all means, this is The Tip Jar.

A tip or gratuity, as defined by Wikipedia, is a voluntary extra payment made to certain service sector workers in addition to the advertised price of the transaction.

This got me wondering, who tips and who gets tipped?

When you go practice, play in a tournament, or travel to a tournament, who are the people that receive your ‘voluntary extra payment?’

When I’m traveling, I always tip my chambermaid (especially in Vegas, I believe it’s good karma). I usually try to tip the counter person whenever possible. You never know when they have the opportunity to return the favor or take care of you. And recently, I was introduced to the concept of tipping the tournament director whenever I win a tournament. I wish I would’ve known about this years ago. Even if it’s only 10% to the guy that runs the weekly $5 tourney, it’s a thankless job and they will remember you for it.

Because of the way that I chalk, there is usually very little blue left when I’m finished with a piece of chalk. I shoot right handed and I chalk using my right hand in a very deliberate, brushing motion to assure adequate coverage. Some may argue that chalking with your shooting hand requires more attention and also gets chalk on your grip hand, but that’s my personal preference. What’s yours?
