Because of the way that I chalk, there is usually very little blue left when I’m finished with a piece of chalk. I shoot right handed and I chalk using my right hand in a very deliberate, brushing motion to assure adequate coverage. Some may argue that chalking with your shooting hand requires more attention and also gets chalk on your grip hand, but that’s my personal preference. What’s yours?

I tend to chalk with my right hand (stroke hand) because you have more ‘control’ as to where the chalk ends up. Personally, I don’t like staining my ferrule with chalk. It also give me more time to think about my next shot.
But, I think that it doesn’t really matter, as long as there’s enough chalk for the shot. I feel it’s more of a habit to help get you into your rhythm.
Just my two cents =]

I always use my stroke hand. It’s part of my preshot routine. I chalk in the same manner everytime too.
I always use my stroke hand. I’ve actually tried using my bridge (left) had to chalk bc it looked easier to just pick it up and chalk while your cue is still in your right hand. But for me, I cant chalk with my left hand. Maybe it’s a coordination thing, but I feel like my right hand has a better brushing movement than my left. Either way, it’s been a part of my pre shot routine to chalk with my stroke hand since day one.
I always use my right hand. I swipe the chalk over the tip in a sweeping motion. Never over the table. I also keep my own chalk in my pocket.
Stroke hand. Tho John Schmidt recommends bridge hand as more efficient and less distracting from table concentration, it doesn’t work for me.
Too much time needed to figure out an escape from my positional follies, I guess.
I am right handed and hold my stick with my right hand while I chalk with my left hand. My chalk magnet is clipped on the outer lip of my left back pocket, so reaching back and sliding the chalk down and off the magnet is easy. And snapping it back is easy too. I realized early it was an efficient method, but maybe my left hand is more dexterous (or became more dexterous over time).
To add onto what I just said… I too am careful to not get chalk on my ferrule, and I am careful to chalk/brush the edge of my tip, where miscues can occur. On very important shots, I might lick my index and thumb and rub the edge of the tip so the slight dampness will help the chalk stick better. I use Masters because I haven’t gotten around to getting Blue Diamond yet.
i chalk with my left hand because i am left handed and i CANNOT use anything but Masters chalk because everytime i do i MISCUE!
Great point Tom Suarez about not chalking over the table. My next favorite is chalking and setting it upside down on the rail. I love blue hands. Thank god the Smurfs are not real! The wife may suspect an affair with Smurfette…
