Returning to Kolby’s

Kolby's Corner Pocket

Tomorrow morning, I leave for PHX (again) and will be returning to Kolby’s Corner Pocket Billiards. I haven’t even had a chance to blog about how nice they were to me the last time I was there.

A week ago today, last Thursday morning, after I was all checked out from the Quality Inn, I left my big bag at the front desk and walked across the parking lot to Kolby’s and as I pulled on the door, I realized that they weren’t open for another 25 minutes. Rats! I had my laptop on my back and my cues on my shoulder in 100 degree heat. As I started to turn around Jason, one of the owners, unlocked the door and said, “We’re not open yet, but would you like to wait inside?”

Boy! Would I?!??? They let me in while they washed all the balls and prepared to open. He also said the sweetest thing, “Are you a student?” I guess because we’re so close to ASU, but I like to think it was because of my youthful appearance and spirit (heehee).

There’s an interesting thing they do at Kolby’s that I’d never seen or heard of before. Maybe it’s an old school thing. They stand all the racks up in the “Corner Pockets” when they tables are not in play. The first time I saw that, I thought, “Aw! Brilliant! At a glance, you can tell which tables are open.”

I asked Jason about it, but he said it was just something that they did when he and his partner bought the place so they kept the tradition. I think it looks pretty cool, myself.

They have Gold Crown 1’s there and they hurt your feelings. They also had an assortment of fun signs throughout the place and pretty good tacos. I’m looking forward to going back.
