$25 Charge for Second Piece of Luggage

Effective May 5th, 2008, United Airlines and US Airways will begin charging domestic passengers an additional $25 to check a second piece of luggage. Exceptions to this rule: if you are flying first class or are part of their most-frequent-flier programs. [This charge is anticipated to generate an additional $100million in revenue. It only seems fair that they should at least increase the weight limit if you’re only going to be allowed one bag.

These are the only two airlines that have jumped on the bandwagon thus far but we’ll just have to see who follows. This comes as a bad time for pool players as it’s just before Nationals in Vegas.

What does this mean for us pool players?
Well, if you don’t already own one, you should seriously consider investing in a larger piece of luggage that is long enough to carry your pool cues and clothes altogether. Caution, however, most airlines have a 50 pound weight limit and it’s really easy to exceed that with all the extra room and weight from our cues/case.

So long, dependable Action travel case that’s treated me so well. I altered mine last year with a couple luggage wheels for handier travel.

Samsonite Detour 3 35″ DuffleI just purchased this Samsonite Detour 3. It’s 35″ x 18″ x 14″ with an over / under zipper for my cues and wrinkle-safe items underneath, and a few more items in the top zippers (mine is red/black of course). It’s perfect! I love it and all its secret compartments! It also comes with a 5 year warranty.

I’ve experienced where my luggage has been lost and/or delayed too many times to leave my cues with the luggage that gets thrown under the plane. Also I would think that there would be dramatic temperature changes underneath the plane ( I’m not sure if it’s regulated. ) I’d definitely be more comfortable with finding some way to include it in with my carry-on personally.

I’m with you on that one, Nick.

Unfortunately, the days of carrying on our cues are behind us. I think they consider pool cues to be a possible weapon of some sort. Even though, to & from PA, there were a couple guys carrying on giant guitar cases. I think guitar strings could be more lethal than my tip-pik.

It just doesn’t seem fair.

If anyone knows of an airline that allows cues to be carried on, I would love to know of it.

Delta Airlines has jumped on the bandwagon. Effective May 1, they will also be charging $25 for a second piece of checked luggage.

[...] I suspected, more airlines have joined the social influences of United & US Air. First Delta and now, unfortunately for me, so has Northwest. Of the 44,542 [...]
