Project: New Shaft (Day 10)

Well, it was a slow week of training but a great week for pool. I began this draft a week ago and have FINALLY completed it.

At the clinic last Tuesday, I got there a little early to work with Butch since we’d been missing each other the past couple clinics. He had a great victory to share with me from the weekend which included a game-winning intentional foul. Just when I thought that was enough of a xmas gift to me, he has me open his card before he left which included a gift certificate for a 55 minute massage at the spa his wife like. WOW… Speechless… What a thoughtful gift. I can’t wait to use it! (just used it today, 12/26)

Next, I had two “new” attendees. Aimee, an APA 6/7 that I had played at Shakespeares during the US Amateur qualifier, and her husband and their friend showed up. She was the only one that came over to work with me and she has one of the most beautiful strokes you’ll see. I felt so honored that someone at her level would come seek my expertise. I barely made just a few minor suggestions (my usual, set, eye pattern, and thoughtful backstroke) and we just played some games together. I had no idea who I was dealing with. Apparently, she was the only girl to qualify on the Camel Pro Tour. Impressive!

Then, Shawn stopped in half way through. I wrapped up with Aimee and spent a little time with him who, as it turns out, is also an APA 6/7. It was a rare and fun evening of intermediate/advanced players. Both Shawn and Aimee hit the ball so great that I just did some fine tuning with those minor things and just hit some balls together.

Then, I ended up subbing at league on Thursday night. Afterwards, my friend Shawn Hallock, super AAA player and teammate of Mike’s, asked if I would be his scotch doubles partner again Tom & Rich, another couple of AA/AAA players. We won 4-1 and 4-2. It was SOOOOO exciting!!! It sounds so silly to be excited over this, but I felt like one of the guys and that I was getting the respect I’d deserved. I only missed two shots during both sets.

In the final game, Shawn hooked me on the ball before the 8 ball and I jump, cut it into the side pocket, almost scratched in the other side, and then almost scratched in the corner. It was really exciting! It was a good night and I’m glad I played. I would count this as Day 10 practice.

Nothing much to report since then… Have a Safe & Great New Year!
