a random smattering…
At the scotch doubles tournament with Robert yesterday, the guy from our first match made an interesting comment, one that I could not resist sharing here.
I’d just taken my turn, leaving Robert a nice shot. My shot wasn’t a difficult one, just a simple roller into the side pocket. While Robert was at the table, down on his shot, I hear a LOUD voice from across the room yell out:
“Are you related to the spider or somethin’?!”
“Did he really just say that???” I think to myself. But wait! It gets better!!
“You know. Ewa Mataya.”
WHAT?!???? Did he SERIOUSLY just say that?!???
I sat frozen for a moment as Robert continued his warm up strokes and ended up missing the shot. The only words I could utter in response were:
“Did you seriously just yell across the table as my partner was down on a shot?”
Robert was too polite. “He was just trying to pay you a compliment,” he said.
Fine. That’s fine. Make all the outrageous “compliments” you’d like, just don’t do it while my partner or I am at the table, that’s all.
Okay, $15 scotch doubles tournament or not. That was not appropriate!
The more and more people know me and somewhat influential I become, I can’t help but to feel a strong sense of responsibility to personally address things like that. I would like to consider myself a positive role model.
This guy may go on the rest of his pool playing life not knowing what poor etiquette and how inappropriate it is to do something like that if I would’ve just kept my mouth shut. I would be doing our entire pool community a huge disservice.
Perhaps, I could’ve handled it more calmly and professionally in a one-on-one forum, but nonetheless, it HAD to be addressed.
If all of us could just accept a little responsibility to help create a more positive, respectful environment while we’re playing pool, it would make for such a better pool world.
